Just how easy IS Oregon? I did my first 40+ day yesterday, but what
about the rest of the state? And how much of a cushion do I have to
build up--I've heard it gets hard again in northern Washington. How
hard?

Hmmm, I think your biggest problem will be snow, at least in Washington
(not too familiar with Oregon). A lot of it will be melted out in a
couple of weeks, but it's possible that there will be a significant
amount still buried. It's going to be hard to make that kind of mileage
when you have to slog through snow. However, the melt is early this
year, so you might be ok. I've found that the areas around Stevens and
Snoqualmie pass are melted out to about 5000 feet so far.

You can get some idea of the trail conditions in Washington by
monitoring the trail reports at http://www.wta.org. Every once in
awhile someone will post a report for certain sections of the PCT.
Search for "PCT".

Good luck!
