If you have not yet left your job, find out what COBRA would cost you, then
see how a medical policy on the open market compares. Unfortunately, if you
have any kind of pre-existing condition you can be turned down for private
insurance in many states. Some states have Guaranteed-Issue laws, where
insurance companies have to accept everyone without regard to pre-existing
conditions, but in those cases it is priced so high that many people can't
afford it. You might look into catastrophic coverage, if you have a few
thousand dollars set aside for a deductible; this might be easier to obtain.
Good luck - this is a complicated issue nowadays.
