[pct-l] Whitney Portal to PCT

I believe you'll need a permit to enter the PCT from Whitney Portal. That
can be hard to get. You should call INYO NATIONAL FOREST
LONE PINE CA
phone ( 760)875-5161
or check their website
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/mt_whitney.html

Whitney Portal is at 8365 feet. There are 2 campgrounds on the way up to Mt
Whitney. The last is at 12000 feet. After that you would have to summit Mt
Whitney and go down the backside to Guitar Lake to find any campsites. Some
people have camped on top or on the trail. I don't remember the mileage from
Whitney Portal to Guitar Lake, but it is a serious hike. It can be done in
one day. It is still several miles to Crabtree Meadows (the PCT jctn) from
Guitar Lake.

Your mid July start date is sounding great this year.
