[pct-l] Right pack for a thru-hike.
Preparing for a thru-hike:
reading: Jardine, Yogi's handbook, PCT guidebooks, this list and others;
workshops: attend talks on the trail, go to the ALDHA-West Gathering at
Donner Pass this October (go to www.aldhawest.org)
training: hike, walk, stretch;
get gear: running shoes (find one that works), bag, tent/tarp, etc.(but
don't get it all now - wait until you do more research)
food: find out what works for you; decide to ship or buy on trail; if you
dehydrate, start this winter
permits: join PCTA (www.pcta.org) and get permit (next year)
worry/anxiety: it is part of the process, at least the first time; any
misjudgments are correctable
Check out the ULA packs http://www.ula-equipment.com/; the P2 may be perfect
for you. Lighter is better for everything, not just the pack.

Well, I've never really used an e-mail list before, so I hope I'm doing this
right. Anyway, I want to thank lonetrail, dude, Gray, Eckert, and AsABat
for responding. You all have given me much to think about, and some
directions to pursue. A few of you suggested checking out the BackpackLight
group, so that's next on my agenda. I've started to read the posted
journals, but I can't find the posted gear lists that someone suggested
reading (or did I misunderstand what was meant by that? At a different
website from the PCTA perhaps?).
To prepare for this trip, I'm doing a lot of hiking and a lot of reading.
Are there any other things that I should be doing now to prepare for a 2005
trip?
Thank again everyone!
Shane
