[pct-l] Mt. Langley

Good posting by Eckert. While the trail from the Cottonwood Lakes side of the Horseshoe Meadow parking area is sandy and beaten down by pack animals, it offers an easy 3-hour hike to timberline and number of choices to camp. Added benefit, you start at 10,000 feet. After 1st and 2nd Lake keep to the left and head toward Long Lake and High Lake. Let the fishermen go to 3rd-4th-5th lakes. The climb to the top of New Army Pass is methodically done by a series of well-built switchbacks. At the top you are rewarded with a solitary, fantastic view of the Owens Valley. The pass is an impressive moonscape, broad and curved like the summit of Whitney, with a sharp drop to the east. The way to the summit of Mt. Langley is apparent. Turn north and walk, then scramble. Those wanting to continue to the other side of New Army will find the route easy to follow down into the Rock Creek area, finally to the PCT by two different routes. Highly recommended. john
