[pct-l] Map question, and ice axes along the PCT

The guidebooks have maps adequate to the task of hiking the PCT,
although some people liked to get the National Geographic/Trails
Illustrated maps for the Sierran parks.

I would send your ice axe to Kennedy Meadows. Assuming you are not
going to enter into the Sierra very early, you probably won't have
much snow before Whitney. After Whitney, you have to deal with
Forrester Pass and potential snow problems. I hauled my
axe all the way to Chester (mile 1330 or so), but didn't need it
from Sierra City north. I used it a fair amount between Yosemite
and South Lake Tahoe and was glad I had it in places. Between SLT and
Donner Pass, I used it a reasonable amount in the early morning when snow
was hard and also in the evenings, when it began to firm up again.
I carried it north of Sierra City because I had run into snow issues the
day before. My general rule was: Carry the axe until you have two whole
days (60 miels) without using it. I would have mailed it out of Belden,
but I got their on a Saturday, I think.
