[pct-l] Food Packages -- Priority Mail vs. First Class

I checked on-line and Sly's costs are correct. But the further the distance the package is sent the smaller the difference. eg on sending a 10lb package from san diego to Cascade locks, the difference between priority and parcel is <$2.

In 2000 a friend mailed me my 25 resupply boxes, the difference between priority and parcel was very small, often 15 cents. Even at the post offices, they'll tell you that for only a few cents more, you can send it priority.
I think that the USPS may have raised priorty mail rates in the past few years.

And as for missed/lost boxes, that was not the case for me. I got all of mine on time. I kept in touch with my friend and he mailed my stuff to arrive a week before my actual estimated arrival date. Being slow and a bit behind schedule does have some advantages.Small hiccup was in Big Bear, where the post office closed at 12 on Sat. and I arrived at 1pm. I had to wait until Monday morning to leave.

I work next door to a large Chicago Post Office. When I asked about the preferred treatment priorty gets in terms of loading/handling, they just laughed. They said it all goes out, everyday, all by truck. Almost nothing goes by air unless its "NEXT Day Air". The USPS has one of the biggest trucking fleets in the country. The advantages of priority is mainly the ability to redirect, return and forward a parcel. Remember USPS does give out a guranteed delivery date/time.

I would think the $5 + premium for Priority Mail is worth it. If you had 20
drops, that is about $100 extra to make sure your packages arrive safely and
when you need it - and could be shipped ahead or returned for no extra cost.
Only draw back for those shipping fuel is that Priority goes Air Mail for
longer distances and so it can't be used.
