Alcohol stove fuel, available by the gallon at hardware, marine supply and
camping stores at about $9. per gallon. Also available by the ounce (as is
white gas) at many resupply points along the PCT and AT.

Other products that are near-100 percent denatured (methyl) alcohol:

HEET fuel line antifreeze, available at auto supplies and service stations.
(Iso-HEET is not good fuel, being isopropyl alcohol, but will do if you can't
find anything better.)

Shellac Thinner, available at paint and hardware stores.

In general, read the labels to be sure you're buying near-100 percent methyl
or ethyl alcohol. Avoid rubbing alcohol, which is usually isopropyl cut with
about 30 percent water. It will burn, but it makes a lot of soot.

Or, following the thruhikers' multiple use principle, carry 150-proof Puerto
Rican rum.
