Brian hasn't picked up on this, and I've been doing some "family business"
instead of reading the list. So, BLTN:

Brian carried a supply of 3/8" and 1/2" hex-head sheet metal screws and a nut
driver, and screwed them into the soles and heels of his trail running shoes
when needed for traction on ice. They are screwed into the bottoms, not from
the inside.

John Vonhoff described the process well, and Matt Carpenter's website
www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm

gives a complete description. (Thanks, Mark, for the address!)

These hex-head lugs won't work as well as crampons, but they are lighter.
Thruhikers shouldn't need need any of these to hike the PCT (just my opinion.)
I would recommend an ice axe for some spots in the Sierra, and some common
sense. The risk depends on the snow condition, the time of day and how many
hikers have prepared the way. Pay attention and be safe.
