I replaced the shoulder straps and hip belt years ago with new, plastic 
connections.  All of the original slides and buckles were aluminum.  The main hip 
belt buckle has the ridges on a cam that tightens down onto the nylon belt.  It 
became loose over the years also. The new plastic one doesn't slip and is 
1/10 of the weight.
