I don't have an alternate theory, but I don't think
your theory holds water based on my experience.

I hiked the AT last year and
wore boots for the first 700 miles before I switched
to trail runners. I had to go up a full size in the
trail runners and when I tried to put my boots on a
few days later (I had bounced them ahead just in case),
the boots no longer fit. My pack was 35-40 pounds with
five days of food and water.

A year later and I'm still buying shoes that are a full
size larger than before my thru-hike.
