For anyone interested, I am a retired forester and longtime P.C.T. volunteer
trail maintainer. The U.S. Forest Service when originally planning the P.C.T.
was able to secure right of way for the trail across WA. State land. The
right of way granted was just that and did in no way specify how the State
was to manage their land. The State is in the business of selling timber with
the bulk of the money so derived going to the general school fund.
Along with a representative of the U.S. Forest Service, foresters of the
State and two of us representing the P.C.T.A. met on the area for a pre sale
inspection. We made suggestions to lesson the visual impact of the logging.
The volume of trees to be removed is somewhat over thirty percent. Further
logging on the area will be many years in the future as this is within the
State's overall wildlife habitat program.
The sale is well laid out and with the suggestions we made incorporated in
the sale plan the Forest Service representative and ourselves signed off on
the sale as laid out.
This is one of the many situations which our P.C.T.A. works through
cooperation to protect our trail when in fact we have no power to do
otherwise.
