A compass isn't all that necessary on the PCT, however as far as I'm
concerned, the guide books are indispensable. The is particularly true where
the PCT crosses roads. Road crossings are often poorly signed or confusing.
I didn't read the text of the book too much but the maps were referenced on
a daily basis.

Most people just buy the guide books and tear them into the individual
sections to avoid having to carry the whole thing.

Also the town guide is helpful to have around. It's good for planning your
next rest stop.
