[pct-l] RE: Hiking boot/sock longevity



I started the PCT in 1999 with a pair of hiking boots that were well broken
in. They made it all the way to Seiad Valley. I just retired the pair I
picked up there. I think you would be pressing it to make the entire 2650
mile. Maybe through Oregon, though.
    I bought two pair of Red Wing socks and not only did they go the entire
PCT , I am still using them today.
  My feet did not swell up at all that I recall. I expected the same results
that I always got on backpacking/climbing outings and that is what I got. No
surprises. I revised and/or changed many items of gear for the hike, but
decided there was no point in switching the footwear I had so much success
with. The only time I got hot spots was when hoofing it down hill on asphalt
into places like Idylwild and Wrightwood, but I stopped in time to prevent
blisters
