They seem to scare the hell out of a lot of people. We saw a few people
packing .45's in the wilderness areas and a couple in my group had bear
spray. It was our intention to hike as a group as to lessen the chance of an
enounter. The faster hikers kept doing their thing and I had a bad foot and
couldn't keep up. You don't know how many times I felt like the wounded
animal, limping along and just ripe for the pickings. After a while I just
gave up trying to keep up, hiked my own hike and reserved to the fact if I
was going to get eaten, there was little I could do.

As fas as sleeping with my food, the way I look at it, is why would a Griz
bother with a few packs of triple ziplocked Lipton's, when I was the full
course meal.
