[pct-l] maps? huge books? vital?

Relax - hundreds of hikers do this - and live to rave about the PCT. So will
you. Yes, you can run out of water; yes, you can hit some icy slopes (and
probably not where you expect them - like in the Washington Goat Rocks in
September) - but ...

1) If you start at the kickoff at the end of April and stay pretty much on
schedule, trail angels put out water stashes just where you need them. Not a
100% sure thing, but what is. At the kickoff you will learn where the
stashes are, meet others, and have a blast.

2) Snow - you can avoid ice if you go during the middle of the day (of
course, that limits your mileage). And, it all depends on the snow year.
Some years are dry; others not. We lucked out - didn't need the ice axe at
all. Many suggest against cramp-ons unless you know how to use them.

There are lots of books out there and lots of stories - many meant to scare
you. I guess most of them happened to someone, but what about the stories
you didn't hear or read where hikers had no problems at all. And that is
most of them.
