[pct-l] Backpacker magazine rescue articles

I also remember the Backpacker rescue articles vividly, as well as one
in the prior issue about a hiker who died when a big boulder rolled onto
his leg. What struck me about all of these people was that they were
all hiking (or rafting) alone. Their particular problems were made much
worse by the simple fact that they were alone. The guy that died died
only because he was alone. He was far off trail, so he wasn't found by
a second person until it was too late. Hiking alone is something I
cannot do. I respect the right of people who prefer to hike alone, but
I hope they consider how much that magnifies their risk when things go
wrong. I am by nature risk-averse ( a nice way of saying chicken***t),
and have never been able to overcome that tendency.
