[pct-l] RE: Food storage/Bear Boxes

Brick:

I am not particulary interested in having thruhikers carry bear canisters. I
am interested in NOBODY sleeping with their food. I am not really interested
in bears. I AM interested in NOT having a bear crash MY tent because said
bear previously was tempted to do the same by Sly [or anyone else].

My position is simple: If you think stealth camping, cooking away from where
you sleep, traversing the Sierra before the bears become active, etc, etc.
will protect you from bears, THEN toss your food on the ground like a man
and go hungry if the bear comes.

Otherwise stop the bull shit and carry a canister.

Tom

PS: Two wrongs don't make a right. Clueless weekenders I understand but that
is no justification for thruhikers.
PPS: I am not focusing on thruhikers nor do I think they are a large percent
of the problem. If I was there would be no thruhiking on the PCT [In case
you forget that I accomplish what I set out to do.]

Tom:

I just don't understand your fascination with trying to make thru hikers
carry bear cans.

Besides the fact that they are experienced wilderness visitors by the time
they make it to bear country, there simply aren't enough of them to make a
difference. Of the 200 or so that start in Campo, how many make it to the
Sierra? A hundred?

There are more clueless weekenders than that on the Rae Lakes loop on EVERY
summer weekend, all densely packed into the regular camp sites; not to
mention all the totally inept car campers.

The effort you spend worrying about the food storage habits of thru-hikers
would probably be much more useful if directed somewhere else.
