Sounds like a candle would work better, especially one that is inside a
suitable chimney. Many backpacking candle lanterns are available.
However, if you want to use a fuel that you are already carrying, have you
tried dropping a floating wick into a small container of canola or olive oil?
No, I haven't tried it, but I've seen vegetable oil "candles" that put out
quite a bit of light. About as much as a real candle. Still, a good old
tallow candle seems more practical.
