Sorry to upset you, but they do use plastic for natural gas lines. About 
12 years ago
when I was working in Oakland, CA, the local gas company (PG&E) was 
pulling orange plastic
pipe through the old metal gas lines to replace them. The crew had a 
fancy device to heat weld the sections
together. Crew member told me that because there was less friction of 
the NG with the inside of the plastic
pipe they could use a smaller size plastic pipe than metal for the same 
capacity.
