Vic,
Years ago, when I was still gainfully employed we use to sell a Product
called "Cattracks"
in the ski shop.  they were used primarily to put on your feet, strapped to
your shoes,
so you would not fall on icy streets or parking lots in weather much like we
are having
here in the Sun Valley area right now.  Hi's in the 50's and freezing down
to 16 degrees at night. Everything is froze solid at night and early
morning. However, mid morning the skate
skiing tracks are fabulous.

I think there are a number of products on the market just like you described
and depending on
where you live.
