I remember that fire. I was there. I watched the fire come over the
north rim of Claremont Canyon and head south. At that time, I said to my
friend, Judy, "Let's get out of here." On the way back down to her
house, a few blocks, the Oakland Police were coming thru on motorcycles
advising everyone to get out now. I remember the traffic jam getting out
of that area. Judy's house was incinerated by the fire.
Yet every year afterwards the local authorities have a very hard
time getting people to do the basics of fire prevention -- clearing
brush back from their houses, etc. And the wood shingle & shake people
still want people to roof their houses with tinder.

Seems often times we people don't learn even from traumatic
experiences.
