[pct-l] Public Land Management

As late as the 1930's the Yakama Indians would set fires to the huckleberry
fields between Mt Adams and Mt St Helens when they left the fields in the
fall. The fires would burn until the first snows. I can remember in the
50's and early 60's having great berry crops. Now the berry bushes are all
stunted or are so overgrown with trees that they are hard to find. Of
course there are LOTS more pickers out there also. Now about the only places
you can find good berries are in 4-15 year old clearcuts. or along the trail
in remoter locations. Just another casualty of near-sighted management
practices.
