[pct-l] Re: BACKPACK-L: military surplus gear MRE's

re the MRE issue- I made some calls and did a little research.
Here are the results.

MRE's are tasty--however the major downfall is weight- you are
carrying a **lot** of water per meal.

For MRE Pasta w/Veggies and Tom. Sauc. the major
ingredients are water, tomatioes, mac, green beans, corn,
soybean oil...etc etc..

The first ingredient is WATER! As is all the others below-
this is evident of course, but was not in my research was
the very low cal count for each meal as well as the
lack of fibre in each meal.

The caloric content is 210 cals for an 8 oz serving for the
Pasta MRE.

Others- all 8 oz serving =

Spagh. and meat sauc = 330 calories
Chicken and rice = 330 cal
Turkey breats w/gravey and potatos = 210 cal

So, for a typical burn for me of 3000+ cal per day I would need
to carry way too many MRE's!! (ie abt 5 lbs vs 2 lbs of FD food).

Data is from Ann at 1-800-441-8855 in customer service who took the
time and effort to go over to the next building and get one of each
meal and read the labels to me!!
