Scheaffer may be right....or he may be wrong. I intend to find out. 
1-GPS accuracy is enhanced dramatically since those days so GPS error will
be very little. 
2-Are the maps wrong? I intend to overlay the GPS plot with my trace based
on the guidebook and see where it is different.
3-Even if the maps ARE off a GPS plot will enable GPS users to find their
way.
