RE: [pct-l] JMT permits

Permits are issued by trailhead, not trail. If you want to walk
south-to-north, the trailheads are used up due to people climbing Whitney.
Whitney Portal is probably impossible. The two trailheads south of Whitney,
Cottonwood Pass and New Army Pass are possible. Shepherds Pass is totally
open but is well North of the trail start and is one hell of a grunt.

North to South the official Trailhead is Happy Isles. You could probably get
a permit if you asked for alternate days. The Panorama Trail from Glacier
Point junctions with the JMT at Little Yosemite Valley, four miles from
Happy Isle and is a very good alternative. There is a bus from the Valley to
Glacier Point.
