I've been lurking for some time now but I wanted to make you all aware of
a very special thruhiker in the class of 2000. His name is Garey Meabon
and he has terminal cancer. He was given a year to live two years ago
but, thanks to extensive chemotherapy, he is still very much alive. His
last treatment is next Monday and then he will go off chemo for the
duration of his hike. I have never met the man -- though I have spoken
to him over the phone -- but we connected through a sales clerk who
waited on my friend "Uphill Wandr'r" (Laraine Downer), a member of this
year's class. Garey does not participate in this list but he will be
keeping an audio journal that he will send home to his wife, Zoe. She
will transcribe it and e-mail it me for posting to his website along with
his photographs. I will do my best to post things as soon as I receive
them. For now, you can find his website at:

         http://www.jps.net/hshires/gareyhike/

I will make sure that you can also reach his site through the PCTA.ORG
hiker journals. As my webspace quota is getting a little tight, does
anyone know of free space where I can move his site for the summer? The
site is currently less than than 1MB but I expect it to grow to as high
as 10MB as the photos are posted. I would need to be able to FTP
(upload) files periodically but certainly don't need full access beyond a
specified folder. I remember a posting from a year ago that mentioned
free space for hiker journals but don't know if the offer is still good
or still exists. I would just try to upload to his AOL account but AOL is
incredibly painful to use for maintaining a website. Thanks for any help
you can offer.
