Jon Phipps isn't on the list, but he was in Damascus early in the week.
(He's doing a month of volunteer work on the AT with the Konnorock Krew. The
Konnorock Krew maintains a huge stretch of the AT, but is headquartered in
southwestestern Virginia, the little burg of Sugar Grove to be exact. The
volunteers have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off, so he managed to get in to
Damascus.) He talked with Pirate (sometimes on this list, I think) and Russ
Shaw, also an FT member and AT section hiker.
Last week and this week Jon's working 6 miles north of Springer Mountain. He
did make it to the new Hike Inn up there and talked with Nimblewill Nomad,
who's currently working at the Inn. Nimblewill Nomad has been invited to
speak at ALDHA (Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association) this year.
ALDHA will be held in Hanover, New Hampshire, in October. Jon is planning to
make an FT presentation at ALDHA--in hopes of attracting more long distance
hikers down here.
Rumor also has it that Dan Smith, well-known co-author of trail books, the
husband of a husband and wife team, may be doing the FT this winter.
All this will certainly generate some interest about the FT among the
long-distance hikine community. Guess we need to be doing lots of trail work
