1***** Volunteer Vacations *****1

"You can never really appreciate a wilderness trail until you have built
one." -- past Volunteer Vacation participant

Now's your chance to feel that appreciation! Volunteer Vacations are the
best way to give back to the trails you use and love. In 2002 spend a week
on the trail in Arizona, Alaska, Washington and more.

2***** Increased Funding for Trails *****2

Thanks to all hikers who joined AHS in advocating for increased trail
funding. The recently approved Interior Appropriations bill included an
increase in funds for the improvement and maintenance of Forest Service
trails. Also, we celebrate the land acquisition funding from the Land and
Water Conservation Fund that will benefit several trails including the Ice
Age, Pacific Crest, Florida and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails.

3***** Winter Trails(tm) *****3

American Hiking Society invites you winter-hiking at the 6th Annual Winter
Trails. On January 19th and on the weekend of February 16-17th, try
snowshoeing for free while exploring your favorite trails in winter.

Learn the location of the events and how you can win a FREE pair of Atlas
snowshoes!

4***** National Trails Fund *****4

Looking for some money to improve your trail?

Apply to American Hiking Society's National Trails Fund - the only national
grants program dedicated solely to hiking trails. Since 1998, AHS has
awarded nearly $200,000! So if you are a non-profit organization with an
interest in hiking, you are eligible to receive an award. Projects
typically
are for trail maintenance, constituency building, volunteer support, and
land acquisition.
