[ft-l] Action Alert 10/8/01 - Florida Forever funding

Hello Florida Trail Association Members:

The Florida Legislature is threatening to cut Florida Forever funding -
please see the alert below from The Nature Conservancy. If Florida Forever
funding is cut, the various state agencies we work with to acquire land to
protect a route for the Florida National Scenic Trail will not be able help
us close the gaps in the trail. Land acquired under Preservation 2000 and
Florida Forever have enabled FTA to build many new miles of trail and close
gaps in the FNST throughout the state. Last year the Legislature shifted
funds from land acquisition to other programs. Please contract your state
senator and representative and ask them not to cut appropriations for land
conservation. You can contact your legislators via the web at:
http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Legislators/index.cfm. Please let me know if
you have any questions. Thank you for your support of the Florida Trail.

                       PROTECT THE PLACES THAT MAKE

                              FLORIDA SPECIAL

LEGISLATORS: KEEP THE FLORIDA FOREVER PROMISE

STOP THE BUDGET CUTS TO ENVIRONMENTAL LANDS!

The Legislature is threatening to cut millions of dollars from state land
acquisition programs. Every dollar cut means more land lost forever . Only
a rapid response from supporters can save Florida Forever funds and the
lands the state promised to protect.

CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS NOW. Tell them to keep the promise to "protect the
places that make Florida special". Don't single out state land acquisition
programs to solve Florida's budget problems.

BACKGROUND

Development and other activities could destroy hundreds of thousands of
acres of Florida habitat over the next decade. Florida Forever is the
state's promise to buy and save the best lands. This has been our only
viable approach to preserving endangered species, saving our coasts and
aquatic systems, and buffering the effects of sprawl.

Florida Forever is the successor to Preservation 2000, which provided funds
to protect one million acres over the past decades. Like P2000, Florida
Forever provides money for conservation and recreation lands and local
parks. Save Our Rivers, Florida Community Trust and the CARL program all
depend on Florida Forever for funds.

The 1999 Legislature pledged to support Florida Forever with revenue to
support the issuance of $3 billion worth of bonds over ten years to
purchase land for conservation, growth management and water resources.

The future of land acquisition as a conservation tool is up to you. The
Legislators need to know of Floridians strong opposition to cutting
conservation funds. TELL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS TO KEEP THE
PROMISE TO FUND FLORIDA FOREVER
