I was counting on the high bank of the levy to slow him down enough to give
me a head start. ;)

There's a lot of ground cover along the sides of the levy, so if there were
an alligator basking at the base of it, you probably wouldn't see him. The
ones that are visible are the ones laid up on the other side of the canal.
It's not until you get well away from your vehicle and you start seeing
lots of alligators on the other bank that you start wondering if there
aren't quite a few down in those weeds along your bank, too. You can also
see little trails where it looks like something has crawled out of the
weeds on one side of the levy and went down the other side, so obviously,
the alligators are quite capable of climbing the bank. The further you are
from your vehicle the more you wonder why all those alligators don't just
climb up the levy and eat you. ;)
