[ft-l] Fires at Bull Creek

The Bull Creek area is afire again. This time it took out about a half dozen
homes and camps along Crabgrass Road (the entrance road to the WMA).

More info after I take a look this weekend.

fires were confined to about 50 acres along a side-road off Crabgrass
Road. Unfortunately, several homes and camps burned to the ground.
While I was hiking around Bull Creek yesterday, I counted 3 helicopters with
Bambi buckets flying to several locations from the water source, apparently
taking care of hot spots. The North Carolina Division of Forestry had two
machines digging firebreaks around the burn area, and a fourth helicopter was
parked at the entrance turnoff to Bull Creek-- being readied as a spotter.
While Bull Creek had some recent rains, it was still not enough to quench the
parched conditions out there. The sand-traps on Loop Road were as
voracious as ever.

On a
better note, the trail is in pretty good shape. A lot of recent blaze
touching-up and mowing. We'll be out Saturday mowing the west side from
the Hunt Camp south. Another work hike is will be scheduled to remove the
deadfall from Little Scrub Campsite. After the fires 2 years ago, all the
sand pines died. Then the hurricanes came through and knocked them
over. Upside-- a lot of firewood for the campsite. Downside- can't
use it until drought conditions are alleviated.
