AT what point will the human race quit trying to blame someone else for
anything and everything that goes wrong and just accept the fact that each
of us is responsible for our own decisions??? If I drive the car, I
follow the basic rules of the road. If everyone else I meet in traffic does
that day, then there are no accidents. If one person decides to act as if
he or she can break a rule of the road, he or she MAY get away with it. But
then again, run one red light too many and you may end up in the morgue.

If I am hiking (or mountain climbing or rock climbing or kayaking or
snowshoeing, etc) it is MY responsibility to follow the basic rules of the
activity -- taking enough food & water, the 10-essentials, telling someone
when and where, wearing the appropriate clothing, reading the weather,
knowing my gear, being familiar with the area, etc. -- if I don't and
something happens, it is MY responsibility. If someone rescues me, then I
have put that person or persons in what is probably a dangerous situation to
bail me out and if they charge me, so be it. They have the right to do so,
just as I have the right to be stupid. Only stupid can end up in a
body-bag.

Who was it -- Chinaurd? (sp) that got sued because some %$#@&* didn't get
his harness belt checked out before he started up or rappelled down a
mountain? Had I been on that jury, I'd have told the man he got NaDa and
he should be glad his own stupidity didn't kill him. It's not the gear's
fault someone screws up -- it's the individual's -- in most cases -- I know
you've got an exception to tell me -- but unless the GEAR can be proven
faulty, it's the individual who is 'stupid' -- and "stupid is as stupid
does" -- so if stupid does something stupid, stupid ends up in a body bag or
paying for his or her own rescue!

I'm all for charging for rescues of any type, except those caused by
'natural' disasters or arson or some felony-type activity.

And especially if someone's been warned NOT to go into an area and goes in
anyway and then has to be rescued. Double his or her bill!
