Actually, I happened to be using one of those three-gallon water bags,
which I filled and carried 25 or so times from a stream nearby.  So I
figured it took about 75 to 100 gallons of very carefully applied water,
and a whole lot of stomping on hot coals in my good boots, to get the
sucker out.  

Oh, and my hiking lowpoint in 1999?  I think I know how that fire got
started ...
