I think a poncho might be great for most of the trail but you might want to 
consider a jacket and pants for the Whites - and any other exposed areas.  I 
have been blown over - literally - from the wind while hiking above treeline 
in the Whites.  Anything you can do to reduce your profile will help a lot 
while hiking up there.  Ponchos provide too much surface area and may just 
end up whipping all over the place and catching too much wind.
