Re: [at-l] Poncho's

Paula:
The only "bad" experience I had with a poncho was not while hiking but in
the Army. I was a drill Sgt. and accordingly had to look perfect. One of
the pairs of boots was treated with a product called Leather Lustre which
made the boots appear to be perfectly spit shined. It also waterproofed
them. One rainy day pushing troops wearing a poncho, the water was
running down the poncho and dripping onto the 8 inches of pants legs
between the bottom of the poncho and the tops of the boots. Cotton wicks
water very well and every drop ran down the pants into the boots, (pants
are tucked into the top of the boots in proper "blousing". The boots
really turned out to be waterproof since not one drop of water that got in
leaked out.

I have not done a thru but prefer the combo of a poncho and rain pants
since the poncho IMO serves multiple functions since I do not carry a tent
but prefer a tarp. YMMV
