As an alternative, you might consider going in at the Montebello fish hatchery. It will add a few miles to the northbound section (and of course subtract from the southbound, right Felix?). The road is up a valley not up a mountain. Bye the bye, much of the road up to Crabtree Meadows follows an early 20th century narrow gauge logging railroad right of way.
