Re: [at-l] Hike the Approach Trail!

OK, I'll chime in...

I am very glad I hiked the approach trail. I was used to having to hike to
the tops of mountains and jut oculd not see getting a ride up. I had heard
the pros and cons before I left and figured that if I couldn't handle the
approach, I probably shouldn't be out there. I though that with the
exception of the short road walk portion just before the falls, it was a
very nice hike. (Then again, I just don't like road walks.)

That being said, here's the impression I got of other people's opinions
about the approach trail...

Those people who regularly went hiking on difficult mountains before they
started the AT (like where I hike in the White Mountains) enjoyed the
approach trail. Most other people thought it was particularly difficult.
There were mixed reviews from those that regularly hike mountains where the
trails are more likely to be well graded (Olympics, Rockies, etc.) or who
hiked often but on flatter terrain.

There were an incredible number of people on the trail who had never hiked
before, never put their backpacks on before starting the AT, etc. They
generally did not hike the approach trail (if they knew of the FS42 option),
or if they did, did not enjoy it.

There are exceptions to all of these impressions. I am not trying to put
words into anybody's mouth.
