I awoke to NPR news that we have a small forest fire in the Blood Mountain
area today. Details were few, but about 350 acres are burning. The AT is
not yet at risk. The fire is in Wilderness area, and heavy equipment cannot
be used. Arson is suspected. There are a few homes in the area, but not in
immediate danger.
As I have suggested before. North Georgia is a danger zone with a prolonged
drought, a great deal of tinder dry leaves and vegetation, and too damn
many of us nature lovers. I would have gone to Blood Mountain Saturday if I
hadn't gotten Clemson/GA Tech tickets (damn good game). Please consider
limiting use of our endangered mountains until we get some rain.
