A number of years ago, I was waiting for someone else to make a purchase at
someplace like Service Merchandise in Jackson, MS.  I picked up a tent and
was hefting it about.  Then I wandered over to housewares and set it on a
bathroom scale.  To make sure that I had a true reading, I set it on a
succession of scales to get an average.  From down the aisle behind the
jewelry counter, a voice booms, "Ma'am, we don't sell those by the pound."
