For those few who still have external frames, a good temporary
hold-it-together device are the industrial size cable ties that can be
purchased at electrical contracting supply stores. If you can't find the
ones that are long enough to loop around the entire width of the broken
frame, you can connect two shorter cable ties in tandem to make a much
more rigid repair of the broken joint than can be accomplished with duct
tape. The cable ties can also be stored in the frame itself.
