My understanding is that Bryson admitted in an interview that Katz was
fictional. He identified him as "someone to bounce my trail stories off of" and
admitted to doing some of the things himself he attributed to Katz, and to
pulling some stories from trail registers. I'll see if I saved the original
reference to the interview. If I find it, I'll post it.
