I first met Chase when Mom and I went to Trail Days '98. He and WoodElf
somehow guessed who we were (I am sure the two redheads thing had nothing to
do with that.) I'll never forget Mom and I at Tye River, with two people
from the at-l, then when leaving, running into Chase, WoodElf, Outta
Chocolate and Mountain Roamer (and Rat Boy). Then finding out later we
passed Daryl and friend on the Trail at Reeds Gap. I was thinking, between
us all there are hundreds of miles between where we live - we've only met
once in real life (at daze for us, and for me, Mtn Roamer and Outta Chocolate
with Felix at Fest earlier that year) the Trail is over 2000 miles long, and
6 listers end up on the same 10 mile section, unexpectedly, in one day, two
of them thru hikers. Nothing planned, not a clue. That was strange. (If I
can find the copy of all of them at Tye River - I gave Outta Chocolate the
original when he was here w/ Felix during the big Southbound hikes - I will
scan it and post it. Everyone looked very happy. Chase had a smile on his
face that day too - although that might have had something to do with a
watermelon ;). Chase is always smiling when it comes to hiking. For all of
the incredible feat that thru hiking is, section hiking seems to require the
same amount of sacrifice and determination. It all equals happiness - and I
am really happy for you, Chase. I wish Mom were here to share it. You and
WoodElf were always special to us, as you known ;) I know she would be
happy for you too.
Congrats, Chase - and I'll see you all at the Ruck.
