I am one haphazard hiker that got into trouble because I had a cell
phone.
I carried one to comfort my wife and others and because the trail is
undocumented. Knowing I could always call for help (an erronious
thought) I let myself push the envelope to far and became dehydrated and
suffered heat exhaustion by continuing to hike without resolving my
water problem sooner--something I would not have done without the cell
phone. It cost me a week of lost hiking, my friend ten hours driving,
gas, etc.
