I don't get it.  If a cell phone makes no sense for a thru-hike, why would it 
be a reasonable item on a section hike.

If people were able to get by without them in a normal days life for sooooo 
many years, why would they need or want them when they are trying to get away 
to the outdoors?  One shouldn't be going into the woods without a clue as to 
how to bail out in case of emergency.  

Only a haphazard hiker would need one.
