Re: [at-l] Re: September 10-12 Maryland Hike (Trail map info)

PATC Map 4, Edition 7 (1998) covers the Appalachian Trail and
surrounding region from Pennsylvania Route 30 south to the
Pennsylvania/Maryland state line at PenMar for a total Appalachian Trail
distance of 18 miles.

Notes on this Edition: There were about 100 improvements. Of
significance: 15 miles of foot/horse trails were added and about 4 miles
foot trails were more accurately located. A PEN MAR enlargement was
added since this feature-dense area was so close to the map edge.
Several Post Office locations were added. The A.T. elevation profile was
redrawn so that it's style matches other PATC maps. In the profile, the
A.T. length was shortened by 0.1-mile due to a 1997 relocation in the
first valley north of the Maryland border.

PATC Map 5 & 6, Edition 15 (1998) covers the Appalachian Trail across
Maryland from PenMar, Maryland, south to Harpers Ferry National
Historical Park in West Virginia. The map also includes the Catoctin
Trail, a long spur trail leading east from the Appalachian Trail. Total
Appalachian Trail distance covered by the map is 41 miles.

Notes on this Edition: The 1998 edition shows the results of three
Appalachian Trail (A.T.) relocations performed in 1997 and early 1998:
the new crossing of US-40-Alt, the new southeast entrance into
Washington Monument State Park, and a more gradual descent approaching
Hemlock Hill Shelter. The new crossing of Raven Rock Road is mentioned
in an "editor's note" since the map was at the press when the relocation
was finished.  The A.T. profile was revised because of these three
relocations, and the new A.T. distance across Maryland is 39.9 miles.
Also, the drainage plate was redrawn to professional standards since the
old plate showed streams as overly thick and obviously hand-drawn lines.
