Phil: If you use a water bladder, consider the inline filter that is made by
Safewateranywhere. It weighs in at under 3 ounces and will filter up to 200
gallons before it needs to be replaced. I did the same calculations that
you
did and when you factor in the wt of the water that must be carried, or the
amount of time that you have to sit around and wait for the water to treat,
with the wt of the Pur Hiker and the wt of the SafewaterAnywhere filter, the
inline filter cannot be beat. Its packaging claims to rid the water of
Giardia. They usually go for at or under the cost of a new filter for the

The pore size is 2 microns. To big. It will filter out Giardia (need 4
microns or smaller.)

For optimal results, always select a filter with a pore size of no greater
than 0.4 microns if you expect it to protect you from bacteria such as
cholera, typhoid, and E. coli.
