[at-l] Hand Swelling w/o Poles

Fannypack has a most excellent point.  The swelling that occurs in hikers hands is called "dependent edema". Just a fancy way of saying that your hands swell from dangling from the ends of your arms.  When you use poles, you elevate your hands and.....presto!...no more swelling.  If you don't use poles, just hang on to your chest harness,  that will help.  The other alternative is walking with your hands over your head....if you've got a partner behind you, it makes for some interesting looks!!
