Yeah, but isn't that what NH locals think of EVERYBODY from out-of-state
(especially those with Mass. plates???)? I admit, I do it too, and some of
it is deserved -- spend a Friday driving on Rte. 16 during ski season and
you'll start shouting the word "Masshole" over and over again, too.

But, seriously, I think some of the locals have a legitimate beef with the
AMC. Lots of people depend on their jobs as loggers to feed their children
and pay their mortgage. The age-old debate between the "conservationists"
(used broadly) and the paper industry is the same today as it was a hundred
years ago. And don't forget, all of us (yes, even us hikers) rely on the
logging/paper industry for the thousands of sheets of paper (millions if
you're in the legal profession) that go through the Xerox machine everyday.
Logging CAN be done right, and IS done right by many many companies out
there. But the conservation groups that want to restrict/eliminate
logging threaten the daily livelihood of millions of workers -- and I'm not
talking about rich CEO's of IP, either -- I'm talking about the
minimum-wage logger with kids to feed who lives in a shack in Berlin.

There IS a middle ground between the two groups. (Just like there's a
middle ground int he MountainBiker-Hiker debate, but I think I'll only
start ONE war for today!).
