According to the program i've seen at Discovery channel on Sunday, the best way to counter that kind of attack by a black bear is to retreat slowly while shouting at the animal (STOP BEAR or GO AWAY BEAR). They also said that you can throw whatever is available, stones, pieces of wood, branches etc. This serves to keep a certain distance between you and the bear. But when you are hit, you should play dead. It's then possible that the bear drags you on a certain distance or even covers his prey (you) with all sorts of debris so the others carnivores will have difficulties finding the meat. I know it's a lot more easy to say than to do but what else can be done?
